Quantifying rarity of intraspecific diversity at multiple spatial scales by combining fine-grain citizen-based data across national boundaries

چکیده

Quantifying rarity at the intraspecific level is an important task for conservation biologists because rare phenotypes have a higher extinction risk than common ones. However, quantitative assessments of are lacking this level, preventing to adequately protect and endangered variants that part pool species. Our aim was take benefit high-resolution volunteer-based occurrence data assess quantitatively patterns facultative paedomorphosis, in Alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris). This polyphenism composed two morphs, adult phenotype retaining gills metamorphosing. We included multiple spatial scales (i.e., resolution) combined 15,613 records from atlas databases seven countries European Alps understand how scale may affect metrics. analyses revealed rarer 292 times phenotype, occupying very small fragmented area occupancy. Yet, depended on resolution data. Rarity estimates were up 1300 lower coarser finer scale. Both presence threats fish introductions) make paedomorphs critically whereas widespread all scales. Altogether, these results show metrics can differ between organisms, suggesting fine-grain should be used rarity. They also combining datasets distribution atlases efficient estimate

Combining Information Across Spatial Scales

Spatial and spatial-temporal processes in the physical, environmental, and biological sciences often exhibit complicated and diverse patterns across different spacetime scales. Both scientific understanding, often reflected in computer models, and observational data vary in form and content across scales. We develop and examine a Bayesian hierarchical framework by which the combination of such ...

Changes at Multiple Spatial Scales

Change detection on rasterized data is extremely dependent on accurate radiometric and geometric rectification. The development of processing tools able to minimise these requirements has been recognised since the late eighties. In the present paper we present a methodology for detecting changes on multidate satellite images with different radiometric and geometric characteristics via Multireso...

Quantifying drivers of wild pig movement across multiple spatial and temporal scales

BACKGROUND The movement behavior of an animal is determined by extrinsic and intrinsic factors that operate at multiple spatio-temporal scales, yet much of our knowledge of animal movement comes from studies that examine only one or two scales concurrently. Understanding the drivers of animal movement across multiple scales is crucial for understanding the fundamentals of movement ecology, pred...

Community Functional Responses to Soil and Climate at Multiple Spatial Scales: When Does Intraspecific Variation Matter?

Despite increasing evidence of the importance of intraspecific trait variation in plant communities, its role in community trait responses to environmental variation, particularly along broad-scale climatic gradients, is poorly understood. We analyzed functional trait variation among early-successional herbaceous plant communities (old fields) across a 1200-km latitudinal extent in eastern Nort...

Additive Partitioning of Species Diversity across Multiple Spatial Scales: Implications for Regional Conservation of Biodiversity

Ecologists and conservation biologists are keenly interested in how patterns of species diversity change across spatial scales. We examined how additive partitioning can be used to statistically evaluate spatial patterns of species diversity and develop conservation strategies. We applied additive partitioning to data on arboreal beetle diversity (richness, Shannon, Simpson) collected from a ne...
